Eat Smart Move More Barnwell County partners with the Town of Williston to install a Disc Golf Course

Disc golf course opening in Williston

A new disc golf course in Williston is expanding recreation opportunities for residents.

The public is invited to a ribbon cutting ceremony this Saturday, March 23 beginning at 10 a.m. at the Williston Town Park. There will also be demonstrations on how to play the game, vendors providing giveaways, free prizes, refreshments and lots of goodies, according to Hilary Hindman from the Axis I Center of Barnwell, which has helped with the project.

The disc golf course was one of the ideas that came out of the Parks Master Plan that Williston Town Council had conducted over a year ago with input from staff,” said Town Administrator Kenny Cook.

The idea for the course was brought to fruition thanks to the Eat Smart Move More Barnwell County Coalition, which received a mini grant through the state’s Eat Smart Move More to purchase the materials for the course.

“Axis I wanted to do something in Williston that promotes healthy lifestyles. They had done some projects in other areas of Barnwell County as part of their health initiative and were looking to do a project in Williston,” said Cook. Axis I oversees the local Eat Smart Move More.

The town funded the rest of the project, including the labor and concrete work, through funding from the Barnwell County Capital Projects Sales Tax that was allocated to “enhance our parks here in Williston to provide more amenities to our citizens and to encourage the use of our parks,” Cook said.

Williston resident Dave Sexton is an avid disc golf enthusiast who designed the course with input from disc golf players from around South Carolina. “When Dave heard we were considering building a course, he jumped on the opportunity to help. Dave has been a great asset,” said Cook.

Even though the official kickoff hasn’t taken place, Cook said he is pleased that a number of people have already used and enjoyed the disc golf course.
