While peer pressure is often viewed negatively, it’s important to understand that it can work both ways. Positive peer pressure occurs when friends encourage one another to do things that are healthy or beneficial—like studying for a test, joining a sports team, standing up to bullying, or avoiding drugs and alcohol. When youth are surrounded by peers who value good choices, they are more likely to make positive decisions themselves. However, negative peer pressure—such as being pushed into risky or unhealthy behavior—can have lasting consequences. Helping teens understand the difference and empowering them to choose the right kind of influence is key to their development and safety.
